Kip Frey
Kip Frey may not be able to talk about his latest venture, OpenSite
Technologies, Inc., because it filed for its initial public offering
in February. But he has plenty to say about the Research Triangle
Park region.
"Besides being a fabulous place to live and raise a family,
the Triangle offers the opportunity to make meaningful contributions
to an entrepreneurial community that is still in the early stages
of development," said Frey, president and CEO of RTP-based
OpenSite.
Frey's contributions have been plentiful. He was executive vice
president of Ventana Communications Group before negotiating and
closing its sale to International Thomson Publishing in 1995.
He then became president of Accipiter, a leading provider of Internet
advertising solutions. In early 1998, he negotiated and closed
the sale of Accipiter to CMG Information Services for $50 million
------ the largest deal ever for a privately held software company
based in RTP.
Frey is now responsible for all of OpenSite's operations and
the execution of its strategic plan. The company was the first
to offer a comprehensive software solution that enables businesses
to host their own interactive online auctions. It has delivered
more than 600 auction solutions to customers such as The Sharper
Image and John Deere.
When he's not at the office, Frey can be found at Duke University's
Sanford Institute for Public Studies and School of Law, where
he is an adjunct professor. He has also lectured at the University
of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. "I
enjoy the potential for interaction with our universities,"
he said.
Frey said the Triangle's "very dynamic combination of private
enterprise and public development" helps high-impact, high-growth
ventures such as Accipiter and OpenSite succeed.
